Gamify Your Content

This is a companion post to a session at WordCamp US 2022.

Here is a link to the slides (opens in a new tab).

Gamification is the adding of game elements to non-games to motivate and engage.

We typically think of gamification as game mechanics like points, leaderboards and badges, but game experiences are more interesting and likely more fruitful in the long term.

In the presentation, I encourage further discussion on twitter and in the comments below. I’ll embed tweets in this post as I see them too.

Open questions:

  • Do you have any examples of gamification to share?
  • Is it bad to make users struggle?
  • Are sliders evil?
  • Should content have only one goal?
  • Is beautiful always best?
  • Can we gamify pricing?
  • How do we change behaviors?

  1. Interesting slides! I wish I had caught the presentation. Are you giving another talk on this topic again?

    1. Thanks, Wes! I’ll be doing a similar talk at https://themembershipsuccesssummit.com/ later this month 🙂

  2. If you want to make users struggle, you need to give them an incentive. Is it worth the hassle? If so, then struggle is great for learning. Failure is where the thinking happens.

    1. Great point! An incentive or motivated to struggle. The challenge is everyone’s point where struggle becomes failure is different.

      Appreciate it!
